Bloodchild

1. What is your reaction to the text you just read?

My reaction to the text I just read was confusing and disgust. In the beginning of the text they are talking about drinking eggs to stay young and get drunk. On the other hand they are talking about host animals. The way the characters are disturbed in the text it's as if some of the characters are not even human. For example T'Gatoi's is described with many limbs and Gan's mother is depicted as yellow and round. The description of "birth" is very vivid especially the part where Lomas is cut open to get the baby grubs out of him.

2.What connections did you make? Discuss the elements of the work with which you are able to connect.

To get a better understanding of the story I looked up the cover of the book. From what I can understand from the cover is that humans are mating with insect like creatures. The different families are the different sub species of insect beings while the host animals are humans. When Gan was describing T'Gatoi he is describing her as a centipede. One connection I was able to make would be the similarities to Ripley Scott's Alien.  The concepts are the same except that the humans and creatures live as one in a unique society. The element of birth however is different. Instead of have one alien baby burst through your chest it's a family of five to seven grubs that eat their way out of you. You can survive the ordeal, but that's only if the grubs are cut out in time.
(Chest burst scene from Ripley Scott's Alien)

3.What changes would you make to adapt into another medium? What medium would you use? What changes would you make?

I would change the the age of some of the characters to adapt it into a movie. Using some of the material provided I would use photography as a medium to create a film adaptation. In the story the author describes the ordeal of birth in great detail. The changes I would make would be to change the perspective of the story. Show the viewer what it would be like to live as a host and the process that the host must endure to give "birth" to a weird alien species.
